# Section 8 — Mitigation Strategies in Production Low-Latency .NET, with Decision Matrices > **Scope of this section.** A comparison of the mitigation strategies actually used by > production low-latency .NET shops (market makers, prop-trading firms, exchange-adjacent > infrastructure, and the highest-profile public case studies such as Stack Overflow-style > high-throughput services and the Aeron.NET / Disruptor-net ecosystems), organized into > five tiers from configuration-only to GC-avoidance architecture. Each strategy is rated > for latency benefit, engineering cost, operational risk, and maintainability, and the > section closes with three decision matrices: (1) strategy ↔ latency-budget tier, > (2) GC-configuration selection, and (3) build-vs-adopt for the supporting libraries. > Allocation-pattern details referenced here are cataloged in [Section 7](07-allocation-source-catalog.md); > GC-mode mechanics in [Section 4](04-gc-modes-and-latency-settings.md). --- ## 8.0 The strategy ladder Production teams converge on the same five-tier ladder. It does **not** get you to sub-100 µs p99.9 — only allocation reduction (Tiers 2–3) and GC scheduling/avoidance (Tier 4) do that, because gen0 pauses still occur whenever gen0 fills (Section 6 has measured figures). **Effort:** hours–days. **Risk:** low (all reversible). **Verdict:** do it, measure it, don't stop there. --- ## 8.3 Tier 2 — Allocation reduction (code hygiene) The direct application of Section 7's catalog. That's the point — but it means (a) the gen2 heap is bigger, so the *rare* full GC is longer (mitigated by scheduling it off-hours, Tier 4), and (b) writes of references into pooled objects hit the card-marking write barrier and add gen2→gen0 roots. Pools of **structs in arrays** (no internal references) avoid both and are preferred where possible. ### 8.4.2 Struct-first data design, `Span`, `ref struct` - Market data, orders, fills as **structs in pre-allocated arrays** (SoA or AoS chosen by access pattern), passed by `ref`/`in`; `ref struct` cursors (`Span`-embedding parsers) guarantee no accidental heap escape at compile time. - `Span`/`ReadOnlySpan` as the universal slice currency replaces `Substring`/array copies (§7.4, §7.6); `Memory` only where heap-storable slices are unavoidable (warm path). - `CollectionsMarshal.AsSpan(list)`, `MemoryMarshal.Cast()` for zero-copy reinterpretation of wire buffers into typed views — with explicit layout-controlled structs (`[StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential/Explicit)]`, `unmanaged` constraint). ### 8.4.3 UTF-8 end-to-end text pipeline (§7.4.3) Pooled/pinned receive buffers → span tokenization → `Utf8Parser`/`Utf8Formatter` → symbol-ID mapping at the edge.
